Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis

Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis is a radical development in genetics. Used as part of assisted pregnancy techniques, it involves the removal of one cell from each embryo, which then goes through dna amplification prior to genetic screening.

This allows for the selection of the healthiest embryos to be implanted, resulting in healthier children, and the eradication of genetic disorders from that part of the gene pool.

It is the only effective method currently available for Germ-line gene therapy, because it works by not implanting embryos with known faults. Because it uses the underlying technology of test tube babies, it is not an easy option.

Because it involves the creation of fertilised embryos which are then not implanted, some of the more fundamentalist christian sects are opposed to the technology in principle.

The basic methodology for using this technique is dramatised in Robert Heinlein's book "beyond this horizon".
