Willard Frank Libby reasoned that Carbon-14 absorbtion by plants would stop when the plant died, and that bu mearuring the Carbon-12 to Carbon-14 Ratio you could accurately determine the age of any organic material up to 45,000 years old. He won a nobel prize for this in 1960.
